Explore Tyneham and The Purbecks…

Tyneham sits between the villages of Corfe Castle and Lulworth Cove, close to the Jurassic Coast, and lies inside a Ministry of Defence training area that is open to the public on weekends and holidays. Surrounded by rolling countryside and coastal scenery, Tyneham is best known for its poignant history and beautiful walking routes.

Tyneham and Purbecks

The Forgotten Salt Pig at Tyneham, is a pop-up café set within the remarkable surroundings in The Isle of Purbeck, one of Dorset’s most atmospheric and historic locations.

As you travel through the rolling hills towards Tyneham, you feel transported to a forgotten time, visitors can wander the quiet lanes where the village once flourished, explore the preserved ruins and enjoy a breathtaking walk down to the beaches of Worbarrow Bay & Pondfield Cove. The beautifully kept St Mary’s Church, the old schoolhouse and some cottages remain open as small museums, offering insight into everyday village life.

Set within this unique landscape, The Forgotten Salt Pig offers a relaxed place to pause and refuel, serving coffee, hot and cold drinks, and simple, locally focused food – ideal for walkers, sea swimmers, history lovers, and families exploring the area. It can be found to the right of the carpark just before the track heading down to Worbarrow Bay.

Before the Second World War, Tyneham was a typical rural English village with a church, school, post office, and family homes. In 1943, the British government requisitioned Tyneham and over 7,500 acres of surrounding land for military training in preparation for D-Day and the villagers were never able to return. Today, the village stands as a powerful and moving reminder of that history.

With stunning walks in every direction to explore the Jurassic Coastline, journey along the South West Coast footpath across the ranges to Kimmeridge Bay, Lulworth Cove & beyond.

The Village remains part of the Armoured Fighting Vehicles Gunnery School, an important training establishment of the British Army. Therefore access to the Village, Worbarrow Bay and Lulworth Ranges due to operational and safety reasons, is restricted to specific times. Generally, they are open at weekends and during school holidays please see Tyneham’s opening hours.

Where it all began
