Chesil Beach Walk (Easy, atmospheric)

Fleet Lagoon & Abbotsbury View (Gentle, scenic)

Isle of Portland Coastal Loop (Moderate, dramatic)

Pebble Pig Chesil Beach

The Chesil Beach walk is an easy yet atmospheric route that can be started from Ferry Bridge or Wyke Regis, with a flexible distance of between two and five miles. The walk follows the iconic shingle ridge of Chesil Beach, where the crunch of pebbles underfoot adds to the experience, even if the terrain is more challenging than it first appears. With Portland Harbour on one side, the Fleet Lagoon on the other, and wide open skies filled with seabirds overhead, it offers a truly classic Dorset coastal walk.

The Fleet Lagoon and Abbotsbury View walk is a gentle, scenic route starting from the Wyke Regis or Langton Herring area, with a distance of around four to six miles. Following the quieter inland edge of Chesil, the walk takes in peaceful paths, grassy tracks, and short stretches of road, all with beautiful views across the Fleet Lagoon. As one of the UK’s most important wildlife sites, this tranquil landscape offers a wonderfully calm and nature-rich walking experience.

The Isle of Portland Coastal Loop is a moderate but dramatic walk starting at Portland Bill, covering approximately seven to nine miles. Following the South West Coast Path around Portland’s rugged coastline, the route takes in striking cliffs, hidden coves, and expansive sea views, with a mix of coastal paths and some steady ascents. The walk finishes by heading north towards Chesil Beach, making it a rewarding and memorable coastal circuit.

  • Best time for dog walking
  • Autumn & winter
  • Early mornings year-round

Chesil and the adjacent Fleet Lagoon form one of the most significant bird habitats in southern England. You might see: Waders, terns, gulls, Wintering wildfowl and migrating species in spring/autumn.

  • Autumn (Sept–Nov) — migration peak
  • Winter (Dec–Feb) — overwintering birds, fewer people
